identity of the navy seal who died in the dangerous hostage rescue in afghanistan. here he is, officials confirmed he was 28-year-old from pennsylvania, a member of the navy seal team six. the same group that killed osama bin laden. the mission this weekend was to rescue a doctor from colorado. he was doing humanitarian work in afghanistan when the taliban kidnapped him last week near the border with pakistan. officials say the seal team moved in when intelligence showed the doctor's life was in immediate danger. now we find out more of the daring raid and the intense firefight that killed one of our most elite fighters. jennifer griffin is live for us this afternoon at pentagon. tell us of the navy seal. >>reporter: he was young, just 28 and he was not on the bin laden raid. that was made up of members who were much older, petty officer first-class nicholas check came from a suburb of pittsburgh, pennsylvania, and died sunday of wounds he received during the rescue. i am told the team took a great dial of fire on the way in and he died of complications later from the wounds h

discuss this disturbing situation straight ahead, but first. >>> a navy seal leaves the service, but still feels a call to serve, now he feels the need to help. >> for me being in the military was one of the greatest experiences of my life. because i was working with incredible men and women, dedicated to serving a purpose larger than themselves. when i served, i did four deployments overseas. in 2003, i came back from a last deployment in iraq, coming back from the al-qaeda targeting cell. when i came home i went to bethesda naval hospital to visit with the returning marines. i asked each of the veterans if you can't return to the military, what else would you like to do? and every single one of them told me they wanted to continue to serve. when i left the hospital i called two friends and we agreed to do something about it. they put in the money from disability checks, i contributed my money from the combat pay in iraq. they set up opportunities to do six months of intensive leadership and fellowship in their communities. we helped them make a transition to being a veteran again.

the navy. he worked in the intelligence field. he was a submarine warfare specialist. he had not only a top secret clearance, but also authorizes for what's called special access, which limits the amount of people who can view highly sensitive material. he had that access. he hadn't been out of the navy for more than a year when fbi agents started tracking him and set up this sting and this undercover operation, and that's how they caught him. >> we know if there was any classified information that was actually released? >> reporter: no. there were never actually any real russian agents, so to speak. these were all undercover agents, b it is very, very serious. i mean, the navy will almost always tell you exactly where their carriers and surface ships are located in any given moment. they never reveal the location of the submarine. that is a highly classified part of the u.s. navy. he faces life in prison if he is convicted of this charge. >> wow. okay. chris, thank you. appreciate it. >>> photographer r.umar obassi happened to be at the new york subway system. that's when a 58-year-o

. serviceman who died in the valiant rescue. >> officials confirm a member of navy s.e.a.l. team 6 the elite squad, that killed osama bin laden, died in the raid that freed the colorado man being held hostage. abc's muhammed lila has the latest. >> reporter: it happened under the cover of darkness. joint american and afghanistan special forces raid to rescue this man, dr. joseph, an american doctor working for colorado based charity morning star development. >> this is a team that has had lots of training on hostage rescues. until you get in there and do it you never know what you will find. >> reporter: here's how it went down. wednesday, joseph and two afghan colleagues were returning from a medical clinic when kidnapped at a checkpoint along the highway by armed militants. they were taken to a mountainous region, afghan captives were released, but joseph wasn't, spending three terrifying days in captivity. when u.s. intelligence showed joseph's life was in imminent danger, the military made its move. >> a hostage rescue mission is really, really dangerous and carries a high risk, th

the united states navy says it's not one of our drones. iran's revolutionary guard says it has captured one of our prized pieces of intelligence, something called a scan eagle. iran says it was brought down by anti-aircraft squads in iranian air space. there's no visible damage in the pictures that aired today on iranian tv, and, again, the u.s. navy, which patrols the persian gulf constantly, says all ever its drones are currently accounted for. it also says its drones stay in international air space. joining me now with his insights and expertise is jim walsh. jim, first and foremost, look, it may very well be someone else's drone. i'll get to that in a moment. but when we say we only patrol in international air space, do we really only patrol in international air space? >> well, the first thing to know about that ashleigh, is international air space is highly contested. different countries draw the maps in different ways. and so you can be in a spot in the air where one country claims it's in international air space and another country claims it's in their national air space

this describing how the american and soviet navies were circling watching each other, get so tired, they almost made a mistake and pulled the nuclear trigger and each other. and finally, just sort of more innocent mistakes, if you look at an example in the 1980's, boris yeltsin, the president of russia, the norwegians had a zero weather rocket that they launched in the direction of russia. then notify the russians, but this time the notification got lost in the mail. the russian generals came and said, look, apparently somebody has lost something in us across our horizon. this is an american nuclear attack you have to miss the launch or russia will be obliterated with no shots back. thankfully was sober that date. relations were good between the u.s. and the soviet union. he said to me you know, it can't be the americans attacking. when you talk about the u.s. and iran, is drolen iran, flight times, the attention, the chances of something going wrong , the escalation ending in disaster, that much higher. finally, you also have to be concerned about iran with a nuclear umbrella. oh,

. that part still unclear. but during the mission, a member of the team, a navy s.e.a.l., sadly was killed. he was a member of s.e.a.l. team six, the same elite unit that took part in the raid that killed osama bin laden. president obama paid tribute to the fallen s.e.a.l. saying quote, he gave his life for his fellow americans, end quote. chris lawrence is at the pentagon right now with home run on this mission. first of all, i think, chris, a lot of people didn't even know there was a doctor who had been kidnapped and needed rescuing. what's the story behind this? >> and that's not all that unusual. a lot of times, they will not publicize a kidnapping while they are still sorting out the particulars or trying to ascertain whether they might launch a rescue mission. it often does more harm than good to put it out there and put the details out there. so that's not all that unusual. in this case, the doctor was working for morning star. a non-profit agency. he was with two local afghan, i believe at least one of them was a doctor as well, and they were coming back from a rural medica
